Die Sackpfeifen-Fibel ist das bislang erste und einzige Lehrbuch zur Sackpfeife, dem mittelalterlichen Dudelsack, wie man ihn von mittelalterlichen Märkten oder Bands wie In Extremo oder Corvus Corax kennt. Das Lehrbuch eignet sich sowohl für Anfänger als auch für Fortgeschrittene und vermittelt eine strukturierte Verzierungs technik. Es führt den Lernenden Schritt für Schritt von der Übungspfeife an die Sackpfeife. Die Atem- und Spieltechnik der Sackpfeife wird anschaulich mit Texten, Bildern und Grafiken dargestellt.Neben nützlichen Übungen sind natürlich auch zahlreiche Melodien enthalten - z.B. Goddesses, Pavane, Skudrinka, das Palästinalied oder der Bärentanz. Neben diesen eher traditionellen Stücken finden sich auch einige moderne Kompositionen, z.B. von Briantanus. Das durchgehend vierfarbig gedruckte und sehr schön gestaltete Lehrbuch ist all jenen gewidmet, die sich für den 'mittelalterlichen' Dudelsack interessieren, so wie er heutzutage auf den meisten mittelalterlichen Märkten zu hören ist. 'Mittelalterlich' steht hier deshalb in Anführungszeichen, weil diese Dudelsackform kein historisches Instrument darstellt. Verschie dene Bezeichnungen werden mit dem Instrument in Verbindung gebracht, zum Beispiel Sackpfeife, A-Sack oder Marktsack. In diesem Lehrbuch verwendet der Autor den Begriff 'Sackpfeife'. Die präsentierten Spieltechniken werden gut verständlich erklärt und erweitern die musikalischen Ausdrucks möglichkeiten auf der Sackpfeife deutlich. Sie geben dem Musiker neue Möglichkeiten an die Hand. Dabei ist es Thomas Zöller wichtig, trotz der innovativen Ansätze, die Eigenheiten des Instrumentes zu respektieren. Die im Buch vorgestellten Inhalte vermitteln erstmalig ein klar strukturiertes und erprobtes Verzierungssystem für die Sackpfeife. Des Weiteren finden sich neben den Übungen, den Stücken und der relevanten Musiktheorie wertvolle Tipps zum Umgang mit der Sackpfeife selbst.
Unter den Lerneinheiten befinden sich visuell hervorgehobene Bereiche. Hier werden die mit der jeweiligen Übung in Zusammen hang stehenden Stolpersteine nochmals gezielt besprochen. Manchmal ist unter den Noten eine Schalmei abgebildet, auf der die zu den Tönen gehörigen Griffe dargestellt sind. Für Melodienoten ist die Schalmei groß, für Verzierungsnoten klein dargestellt. Wie bei jedem Instrument, so gilt auch bei der Sackpfeife, dass ein komplettes Selbststudium nicht zu empfehlen ist. Man tut also gut daran, zusätzlich zur Sackpfeifen-Fibel nach einem Lehrer Ausschau zu halten, der sich gewissenhaft mit den Bedürfnissen und Problemen des Schülers auseinandersetzt.
