De basis voor de methode is 20 jaar geleden gelegd, toen Hein drie maanden de tijd heeft genomen om in alle rust te studeren en zijn basspel verder te ontwikkelen. De berg aan mogelijkheden is enorm en de verleiding om van alles een beetje, en uiteindelijk heel weinig, te doen is groot. Hein is allereerst gestart om alles in kleine, overzichtelijke oefeningen op te delen. Dit resulteerde in een kaartsysteem met uiteindelijk 250 oefeningen. In de loop van de jaren zijn de oefeningen uit deze kaartenbak steeds verbeterd en 5 jaar geleden kreeg het idee, tijdens een sabbatical in Zuid Afrika, om de methode in een lesboek vast te leggen vaste vorm. In de praktijk van het lesgeven aan leerlingen bleek dat ook het verhaal van de weg naar goed basspelen een belangrijk element is. Het gaat niet alleen om de noten, maar ook om de manier waarop je studeert en ook om de ervaringen die je opdoet in de praktijk. De meeste lesmethoden bestaan uit noten, vingerzettingen en hoogstens dynamiek. Hein heeft gekozen voor een andere benadering en heeft in zijn eerste boek zijn ervaring over het ontwikkelen van het basspelen vastgelegd.
In de praktijk leert hij bassisten dat de kracht van studeren zit in intensieve concentratie en heel doelgericht studeren.Om dit aan te leren, geeft hij aan dat het best kan dat je maar twee uur per dag studeert. Dit betekent dat je heel helder moet zien welke doelen je aan jezelf stelt. Een goede manier is om een concrete tijdsindeling te maken, deze op te schrijven en je daaraan te houden. Leerlingen komen na een week meestal terug met het verhaal dat het zeer onbevredigend is. Belangrijk is echter om het het schema daarna nog enkele weken vol te houden en pas dan te merken dat je in staat bent om het concept werkelijk toe te passen.
Hein zegt dat het talent om geconcentreerd te werken een sleutel is tot succes. Zijn methode is gebaseerd op het uitgangspunt om vanuit meesterschap, op welk niveau dan ook, te werken aan de ontwikkeling van je basistechniek. Toegegeven, het werkt niet altijd en voor iedereen, maar het is zeer de moeite waard om te onderzoeken of deze wijze van studeren bij je past. Hein geeft verder aan dat zijn boeken voornamelijk de techniek bevatten en niet zijn opgebouwd vanuit de invalshoek van een muzikale oefening. Veel oefeningen klinken erg abstract, maar gaan heel duidelijk op een bepaald doel af. Het eerste boek beschrijft de oefening, de moeilijkheid hiervan en hoe deze is te overwinnen met daarbij een kort voorbeeld. In het tweede boek staan aansluitend uitgebreidere oefeningen om verder te studeren.
De boeken zijn met name bedoeld voor jazzbassisten die al wat langer spelen en een aantal jazz-standards beheersen. Het gaat met name om de goede amateur en alles wat daarboven zit. De methode is voornamelijk gericht op pizzicato-spel. Dit betekent dat veel gebruik wordt gemaakt van bv. open snaren en snaarwisselingen. Voor de klassiek georienteerde bassisten valt echter bij deze methode ook nog het een en ander te ontdekken.
Boek 1 is leuk om te lezen, onder andere het feest van de herkenning als het gaat om de stappen in je ontwikkeling. Er staan veel praktische adviezen in, zoals spelen met de drummer en spelen met de zanger(es). Het is een boek om naast je bed te leggen om er af en toe datgene uit op te pikken wat je nodig hebt. Boek 2 geeft in aanvulling op het eerste boek de uitgebreide oefeningen, tot in detail uitgeschreven met vingerzettingen en snaaraanduidingen. Het is belangrijk, met name in jazz, om een universele techniek te beheersen, die de basis voor je spel vormt. Deze methode is beproefd en maakt het je gemakkelijk. De methode geeft een solide basis; alles wordt in positie gespeeld en alle vingers staan altijd klaar. Hein geeft aan dat dit, wat hem betreft, niet de enige methode is, maar dat het wel een goede, doorleefde methode is die een heel werkbare basis vormt om improviserend te spelen en die sterk gebaseerd is op de klassieke Simandl en Nanny methodieken.
