| The art of playing the Harpsichord. Edited by Anna Linde. English translation by Mevanwy Roberts. Book in French, German and English. Preface By Couperin: The Method which I give here is unique, and bears no relation to the Tablature, which is merely a Science of numbers; but here demonstrated by rules. I deal in particular with the Art of fine playing on the Harpsichord. I believe even that I give some notions (on the taste and style suited to this instrument) which are sufficiently clear to be approved of by the skilful, and to be a help to those who aspire to become so. Just as there is a long way to go from Grammar to Declamation. so too the distance from the Tablature to the art of playinfg well is immense. I need not fear, there fore, that there will be any misapprehension on the part of those people who are more enlightened. I need only exhort the others to be docile, and to lay aside any prejudices they may have; in any case I must assure all that these rules are absolutely necessary if they are to attain success in the execution of my Pieces. |
