De hele geschiedenis door proberen kunstenaars, filosofen, pedagogen en wetenschappers te begrijpen hoe ons brein erin slaagt muziek te ‘denken’ en dit denken te synchroniseren met duizenden feilloos gecoördineerde spierbewegingen. Nogal wat onderzoekers zien een parallel met taal: net zoals spreken wordt musiceren ‘in realtime’ syntactisch gestuurd zonder al te veel bemoeienissen van ons bewustzijn en leren we het spelenderwijs, op het gehoor en uit het geheugen. Met een minimum aan klanken weerspiegelen we onszelf en de wereld. Worden we als componisten geboren? Tot ver in de 18de eeuw blijft expertise het product van creatieve werkvormen en getuigt de professionaliteit van de oude balans tussen improvisatie, compositie en ‘score performance’.
Pas vanaf het wijdverbreid beschikbaar worden van gedrukte muziek en het (gelijktijdig) ontstaan van de nationale conservatoria worden creatieve, reproductieve en theoretische vaardigheden geleidelijk aan structureel gescheiden. Uitvoerders, toehoorders, componisten en theoretici worden aparte categorieën. Het nagenoeg verdwijnen van muzikale creativiteit, een zwak ontwikkeld gehoor, een onbetrouwbaar geheugen, een verstoorde beleving en zelfs onwaarachtigheid vormen sindsdien de typische pathologie van generaties hooggeschoolde uitvoerende musici. Na jaren ‘teaching research’ met kinderen en volwassenen concluderen de auteurs dat de gangbare muziekagogiek niet compatibel is met de manier waarop het menselijk brein muziek verwerkt. In dit boek zetten zij ‘leren musiceren’ onvermijdelijk in een evolutionair perspectief. Muziek komt niet van de goden, maar zit net als taal van bij de geboorte in het brein gebakken. Het boek wil musici en pedagogen opnieuw op het spoor van de klank zetten. Het toont aan dat een creatief-auditieve omgang met de muzikale bouwstenen onmisbaar is in de groei naar muzikale expertise, artistieke integriteit en zelfredzaamheid.

Schimpke Christoph - Partita B-Dur - Partita in B Flat Major
For 2 Clarinets, 2 Horns and bassoon. Score and parts. The name of the composer and bassoon virtuoso is nowhere to find in major music encyclopedias of our time. Schimpke, born in Tetschen (now D in in the Czech Republic) was overshadowed by Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf, other composer and orche- stra musician of the Johannisberg (now Jánsk Vrch – Czech Republic) castle court. Both of them lived there for twenty years (Schimpke until his death) and both performed managing functions in the orchestra. Christoph Schimpke composed eleven symphonies, about twenty concertos (including five for viola and four for bassoon) and many chamber music works (mainly for wind instruments). His compositions were much respected during his lifetime but only recently have they started to be appreciated by mu- sicians and editors. It is perhaps no coincidence that the manuscript of the Partita in B-flat major, which was the source material for the present edition, is in Wroc aw. The owner of the Johannisberg castle was the Wroc aw bishop, count Philip Gotthard Schaffgotsch. Now the manuscript is in the posse- ssion of the Wroc aw University Library. The pre- sent publication is the first printed edition of the Partita in B-flat major by Christoph Schimpke.

For Guitar, standard notation, commissioned by the XII “Silesian Guitar Autumn” Festival in Tychy (Poland) 2008, was written in Louisville during the last few months of the year 2007. The basic idea for the composer was to create a kind of musical collection of chaotic bits of memories, from which the performer, as well as the listener, would pick out smaller or bigger fragments and focus on them, treating the other secondarily, as it often happens while recalling memories of things that are passed (therefore the title). The piece, intended as a part of the guitar competition, is also an attempt to generate the material challenging for the performer, without using the sound idiom, which is characteristic for this specific and difficult instrument. Things Passed consists of three parts, of which the first primarily uses the sonoristic events, the second focuses on the rhythm and harmony, and the last summes up and unites the previous parts.
