The present publication is the first complete edition of the cycle ‘Harmonies poetique et religieuses’, in the original form in which Liszt completed it in 1847, almost six years before the final, well-known cycle was issued. To many pianists and Liszt scholars this eleven-part cycle of piano pieces may seem at first sight to be ‘Old wine in new bottles’, but this would be totally unjustified, for the 1847 cycle contains several entirely unknown works, such as ‘Litanies de Marie’, that more than deserve to be rescued from oblivion.
